Why Weight Distribution Matters

Your trailer’s tongue weight should be 10% to 15% of its loaded weight. On a plain ball mount, all of that sits on your truck’s rear axle. The rear squats, the front lifts, and you lose steering and braking grip. A weight distribution hitch uses spring arms to push part of that load forward to your front axle and back to the trailer’s axles, so your truck rides level.

How the e2 Controls Sway

The e2’s spring arms ride on rigid L-brackets bolted to your trailer frame. The tension on those arms creates two points of steel-on-steel friction that constantly resist the trailer swinging side to side. That’s what fights back when a semi passes or a crosswind hits.

Because the sway control is built in, there are no chains, no add-on friction bars, and nothing to remove before backing into a site, making a tight turn, or driving in the rain.

Round Bar or Trunnion?

The e2 comes in two spring arm styles. Both work the same way. Go with trunnion if ground clearance is a concern, or if you need the lightest (450 lb) or heaviest (1,200 lb) rating.

Round bar brackets mount 24″ to 27″ back from the coupler. Trunnion brackets mount 27″ to 30″ back. That range lets you work around propane tanks and battery boxes on most trailer tongues, and the e2 works with surge brakes.

Setting It Up Right

The e2 only performs as well as its setup. The round bar manual and trunnion manual cover every step, and Fastway has an e2 installation guide. The details that matter most:

Load up first. Set up the hitch with the truck and trailer loaded the way you travel, including water, propane, and gear. Inflate tires to spec and turn off any auto-leveling suspension during setup.

Measure your front fender three times. Measure from the ground to the bottom of the front wheel well:

• A: Trailer unhitched
• B: Trailer on the ball, spring arms off
• C: Trailer on the ball, spring arms engaged

Your weight distribution is (B − C) ÷ (B − A) × 100. Aim for 50% to 100%. For example, if A is 30″, B is 31″, and C is 30-1/4″, you’re at 75%. Too low? Add spacer washers or raise the L-brackets. Over 100%? Remove washers or lower the brackets.

Account for auto-leveling. Four-corner auto-leveling suspension cuts weight distribution by 20% to 25%. If you can’t keep it off while driving, set up for 75% to 100%.

Level the trailer. If the front and rear of the trailer frame differ by more than 1-1/4″, move the hitch head up or down on the shank.

Torque everything. Shank bolts to 250 ft-lbs, link plate bolts to 65 ft-lbs, and L-bracket nuts to 75 ft-lbs. Socket bolts need at least 60 ft-lbs before you tow.
